Pre-2008 - Carrie Nation - The Gloom Lifter

Carrie A. Nation

Quite the saucy broad, Carrie A. Nation is one of the women who made prohibition (and the theme of tonight’s gathering) possible. She began her “work” (smashing bars with a hatchet while a team of hymn-singing women stood by) for the temperance movement in Kansas, while married to her second husband, a minister. Her methodology, however, was inspired by her first marriage to a severe alcoholic.  She was nearly 6 feet tall and could be quite a presence when she arrived at local bars with her hatchet.  She described herself as "a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what he doesn't like.”  She also had the good sense to trademark her name in Kansas.

The Drink:

The Gloom Lifter
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp. sugar
1/2 pony raspberry syrup
1/4 pony egg white
1 jigger irish whiskey
1/2 tsp brandy
