November, 2009 - Fillmore & Johnson - Grand

Abigail Fillmore: 1850-1853 - In 1819, she took a teaching post at the new academy in New Hope, where her oldest pupil was 19-year-old Millard Fillmore. The world of knowledge and Fillmore's steady progress in it drew them together, and gradually the relationship of teacher and student evolved into romantic attachment.

Eliza Johnson: 1865-1869 - At 16, Eliza Johnson married at a younger age than any other First Lady.  She was better educated than Johnson, who by this time had barely taught himself to read and spell a little. Johnson credited his wife for teaching him to do arithmetic and to write, as he had never attended school himself. She tutored him patiently, while he labored in his tailor shop.
