2008 - Karen Blixen - Dawa

B. 1885 – D. 1967. Karen Blixen was born in Denmark in 1885. In 1914 she marred Baron von Blixen-Fenecker and moved to Kenya to start a coffee plantation. Her experiences in Kenya formed the basis for the second of her books, “Out of Africa” (later turned into a movie starring Maryl Streep and Robert Redford). Though her marriage did not last (her husband had an affair and gave her syphillis), her writing career did. At the time of Karen Blixen’s death, she was the author of six novels and many short stories and essays. Her former home is now a museum and coffee garden in the suburb of Karen, outside of Nairobi.

The Cocktail:

Dawa

1 tbsp honey
2 oz. vodka*
crushed ice

Slice lime into wedges and place in strong tumbler. Apply pressure to the wedges with a pestle to release lime juice without pulping. Add the honey and then cover with crushed ice. Pour vodka over ice and stir to mix the lime juice, honey and spirit.

Comments:
SS: I’m drinking honey water – maybe I drink a lot.
WER: Subtle vodka kick
general note: all cocktails finished in less than 10 minutes. Yes, that’s how FREAKING DELICIOUS these are. But in order for it to taste right, you have to follow the precise instructions.
