2008 - Queen Elizabeth I - Grand Royal

Elizabeth was Queen of England from 1558 to 1603. Her road to the English throne was not an easy one. During the reign of Edward the VI, Elizabeth was accused of plotting treason with Thomas Seymour, who was later arrested for trying to kidnap Edward. Upon his execution, Elizabeth reportedly said: “Today died a man of much wit, and very little judgment.” Once King Edward died, Elizabeth’s sister Mary ascended the throne. Ever an unpopular Queen, Elizabeth may or may not have led several uprisings against her. Mary eventually imprisoned Elizabeth in the Tower of London to get her out of the way. Mary died in 1558, at which point Elizabeth was crowed Queen Elizabeth I of England. She led the English navy to victory against the Spanish Armada, and united England under the Anglican church. Elizabeth never married, and instead successful played her suitors off against each other, thus gaining many alliances and gifts, but never having to share the throne.
