November, 2009 - Rachel Jackson - Oh Henry!

Rachel Jackson:

1828 - Born in present-day Halifax County, Virginia, Rachel was the daughter of Colonel John Donelson and Rachel Stockley-Donelson. John Donelson was a surveyor and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses at the time of Rachel's birth. Her father moved the family to Tennessee, and then later, to Kentucky. Although a dowdy, forlorn figure in middle age, famous for smoking a corncob pipe, Rachel Donelson in her youth was a comely, vivacious woman. She was known for her intelligence and wit. She was clearly able to "hold her own" in any conversation and was popular with the men she met. At 18, Rachel Donelson married Colonel Lewis Robards. Robards's jealousy of a young boarder named Peyton Short, made it impossible for Rachel live with him. They separated in 1790. Despite her pleas of innocence, Robards ordered her to return to her family until he called for her. Soon after she had rejoined her mother, Andrew Jackson arrived as a boarder at the Donelsons. Eventually they fell in love. Nevertheless, when Robards came to Nashville to reclaim his wife, Rachel dutifully returned with him to Kentucky. She soon learned, however, that he had not changed. He had not curbed his rages of jealousy. Told of Rachel's unhappiness, Jackson raced to Kentucky and rescued her. In December 1790, Robards told his wife that he had filed for divorce with the state legislature and the divorce was final; in reality, Robards had actually asked the legislature to pass an enabling act permitting him to sue for a divorce. Andrew Jackson married Rachel Donelson-Robards in August 1791. This marriage was later deemed invalid because Rachel's divorce had not yet become final. They remarried, this time legally, on January 17, 1794. Unfortunately, their remarriage did not end the matter. The charge of adultery was to haunt the couple ever after. Andrew Jackson was devoted to Rachel. He fought 13 duels to protect her honor, and even killed one opponent, Charles Dickinson. On October 1, 1803, he challenged John "Nolichucky Jack" Sevier (the first governor of Tennessee) to a duel after Sevier had dishonored Rachel by saying, "I know of no services you have rendered to this country other than taking a trip to Natchez with another man's wife!" Andrew Jackson ran for President in the especially competitive four-candidate 1824 election. He became the first contender to win the popular vote but lose the electoral vote. During the 1828 presidential campaign, members of the press found out about the Jackson's premature marriage. Rachel was accused of adultery and attacked mercilessly. Jackson tried to keep such reports from his wife, who by then had a history of heart trouble. However, she had heard enough to realize that her past was the target of muckraking by the press throughout the entire nation. Possibly as a result of her anguish, Rachel grew ever more ill.  Rachel Jackson died suddenly of a heart attack on December 22, 1828. The date was just two weeks after Andrew Jackson had won the presidential election, but prior to his inauguration. Over 10,000 people attended the funeral. Rachel Jackson was buried on Christmas Eve in her white inaugural gown

November, 2009 - Louise Henry Hoover - Dallas Texan

Louise Henry Hoover: 1929-1933 -

Born in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Charles Delano Henry, a banker, and Florence Ida Weed, "Lou" grew up something of a tomboy. Charles Henry took his daughter on camping trips in the hills—her greatest pleasures in her early teens. Lou became a fine horsewoman; she hunted, and preserved specimens with the skill of a taxidermist; she developed an enthusiasm for rocks, minerals, and mining. In 1894 she enrolled at Stanford University as the school's only female geology major. That year she met Herbert Hoover, then a senior. Both Hoover and Lou Henry were aged 24 when they married on February 10, 1899.  Possessed of a natural ear for languages, Mrs. Hoover became quite proficient in Chinese. In the White House, the Hoovers at times conversed in Chinese to foil eavesdroppers. Mrs. Hoover was also well versed in Latin; she collaborated with her husband in translating Agricola's De Re Metallica, a 16th century encyclopedia of mining and metallurgy. The Hoover translation was published in 1912, and is still in print as the standard English translation. During World War I, she assisted her husband in providing relief for Belgian refugees. For her work she was decorated in 1919 by King Albert I of Belgium. While Hoover served in the cabinet of Presidents Harding and Coolidge, she was active as national president of the Girl Scouts of the USA. She funded the construction of the first Girl Scout house in Palo Alto, California. It is called Lou Henry Hoover Girl Scout House. It is the oldest Girl Scout House in continuous use in the country

November, 2009 - Fillmore & Johnson - Grand

Abigail Fillmore: 1850-1853 - In 1819, she took a teaching post at the new academy in New Hope, where her oldest pupil was 19-year-old Millard Fillmore. The world of knowledge and Fillmore's steady progress in it drew them together, and gradually the relationship of teacher and student evolved into romantic attachment.

Eliza Johnson: 1865-1869 - At 16, Eliza Johnson married at a younger age than any other First Lady.  She was better educated than Johnson, who by this time had barely taught himself to read and spell a little. Johnson credited his wife for teaching him to do arithmetic and to write, as he had never attended school himself. She tutored him patiently, while he labored in his tailor shop.

November, 2009 - Harriet Johnson - Black Hawk

Harriet Rebecca Lane Johnson

niece of lifelong bachelor James Buchanan, acted as First Lady from 1857 to 1861. An orphan after the death of her father when she was 11 years old (her mother had died two years earlier), she requested that her favourite uncle, James Buchanan, be appointed her legal guardian. After the sadness of the Pierce administration, the capital eagerly welcomed its new "Democratic Queen" to the White House in 1857. Harriet was a popular hostess during the four years of the Buchanan presidency. Women copied her hair and clothing styles (especially when she lowered the neckline on her inaugural gown by 2.5 inches), parents named their daughters for her, and a popular song ("Listen to the Mockingbird") was dedicated to her. While in the White House, she used her position to promote social causes, such as improving the living conditions of Native Americans in reservations. She also made a point of inviting artists and musicians to White House functions. For both her popularity and her advocacy work, she has been described as the first of the modern first ladies, and her popularity at the time is compared to that of Jacqueline Kennedy in the 1960s. The Presidential Yacht was named for her and pressed into service during the Civil War—the first of three ships to be named for her, one of which is still in service today. As sectional tensions increased, she worked out seating arrangements for her weekly formal dinner parties with special care, to give dignitaries their proper precedence and still keep political foes apart. Her tact did not falter, but her task became impossible--as did her uncle's. Seven states had seceded by the time Buchanan retired from office and returned with his niece to his spacious country home, Wheatland, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

AAAAND ... BREAK!

*Whew*  So, below this post are all the recipes (and a few awesome women of history) that was recorded on the old website prior to Sept 2008.  Due to "pack rat habits" some of the Ladies have helped me track down some of the themes/and dates (2005 is pretty well fleshed out, especially).

Next, I will be fishing from our members and seeing who still has old PDF scans of minutes or other scraps of paper from the 2008 - 2012 period.

We appreciate your patience and understanding that, due to the nature of LUPEC meetings, record keeping is not always our top priority.  However, having a directory of old drinks is a good goal; and I, myself, having only joined in 2011, am really finding all these recipes fascinating and have marked a few for me to make at home, sometime!  After all, the goal is Cocktail Conservation - and if these cocktails are going to "survive," someone's got to make and drink them!

Once we get all the backlog handled, I'm hoping to do regular updates after each monthly meeting, including the theme, the host, the cocktails, and the ladies of note.  Since our standard format is 4 cocktails to go with 4 women, per meeting (though it's not a hard rule, just a guide), I might space each woman/cocktail combo post out a bit, instead of posting all 4 at once.

December, 2006 - Nyarr Pirates! - Anne Bonney - Devil's Cocktail

Anne Bonney

Anne Bonney was a pirate who frequented the Caribbean from 1718 - 1720.  She was captured in November, 1720, and at her trial it was said that she was "profligate, cursing and swearing much, and very ready and willing to do anything."

The Drink:

Devil’s Cocktail
1 oz. tawny port
¾ oz. dry vermouth
1 dash lemon juice
1 twist of a lemon peel
Stir well over ice cubes and strain into a cocktail glass.
Drinkability: 5 (despite initial skepticism, actually quite tasty)
Drunkability: 3 (all alcohol, but also the fourth drink of the evening, will probably sneak up and bite you on the ass, aka a cliff drink)
Taxic Diversity: 3 (port and lemon juice and indian food weirdness)
Accessibility: 4 (apparently port only lasts on the shelf for a few months)
Priority for Conservation: 5
Comments: FR: “It tastes like Indian food”, everyone agrees

December, 2006 - Nyarr Pirates! - Lilith - Apfelpunsch

Lilith:

Lilith appears throughout Mesopotamian myth and Judeo-Christian texts alternately as a night goddess, or the first woman created by God in the Garden of Eden.  In the creation myth, she refuses to submit to Adam's will, and up and leaves the Garden.  There were no apples involved, however, there are lots of apples in this tasty cocktail.  Up in ya!

The Drink:

Apfelpunsch
1 gallon apple cider
orange zest
lemon zest
6 oz apple brandy
one cinnamon stick
Drinkability: 5
Drunkability: 2 (should be low but proportions are different, aka there can be a shot of rum in each glass)
Taxic Diversity: 2 (cider)
Accessibility: 3.5 (apple brandy could be difficult to find but rum people have)
Priority for Conservation: 5 (why would you just drink plain apple cider when you could drink this?)

December, 2006 - Nyarr Pirates! - Fuzzy Valencia

Fuzzy Valencia
1-1/2 oz. Irish Whiskey
¾ oz. Amaretto
5 oz. orange juice
Shake and serve.
Drinkability: 5 (another breakfast drink, would make a dangerous punch with added nutrition of oj, bit at the end but already down by the time you feel it)
Drunkability: 2 (low, mostly oj and a shot of whiskey but MG feels “a little fuzzy”)
Taxic Diversity: 2 (low, again mostly oj, similar to a screwdriver or any other oj based drink)
Accessiblity: 3.5-4 (the amaretto might need a trip to the store)
Priority for Conservation: 5 (high, add to menu with mimosas, etc, everyone would have it again, perhaps several times in one sitting)
