Susan Solomon
Susan Solomon (born 1956 in Chicago) is an atmospheric chemist working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Solomon was one of the first to propose chlorofluorocarbons as the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole. Solomon began her interest in science as a child watching The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. In high school she placed third in a national science fair, with a project that measured the percent of oxygen in a gas mixture. Solomon received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1977. She received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981, where she specialized in atmospheric chemistry.
Deciphering the cause of the Antarctic ozone hole came from Solomon’s theoretical work and first-hand scientific observations. Her theoretical work showed that reactions of man-made chlorine compounds occurring on the surface of polar stratospheric clouds could play a defining role in forming the Antarctic ozone hole. This has since been firmly established as the key to Antarctic ozone depletion. Besides her seminal theoretical studies, her key measurements helped develop the scientific understanding needed to confirm the theory of ozone depletion. In particular, in 1986 and 1987 she led expeditions to Antarctica and personally carried out the first observations of chlorine dioxide, which showed that its abundance there is about 100 times greater than predicted. This was the first direct evidence that pointed to chlorine chemistry as the cause of the Antarctic ozone . Solomon also showed that volcanoes could accelerate the reactions caused by chlorofluorocarbons, and so increase the damage to the ozone layer. Her work formed the basis of the U.N. Montreal Protocol, an international agreement to protect the ozone layer by regulating damaging chemicals

The ancestor agencies of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration include the United States Coast Survey established in 1807, the United States Weather Bureau established in 1870, and the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries established in 1871.
These organizations were the first physical science agency in the United States, the first agency formed specifically for observation and study of the atmosphere, and the first agency formed to study and conserve natural resources. Under these agencies and their descendants the United States has become recognized as a world leader in the sciences of geodesy, geophysics, metrology, oceanography, meteorology, climatology, marine biology, and marine ecology.
For many years, from 1891 to 1918, the now long-closed Narragansett Pier weather station was headed by the only woman observer in the U.S. Weather Bureau. Margaret E. Conway was the observer in charge of the weather station at Narragansett Pier, located in what was then known as Gould’s Cottage, from her appointment on July 11, 1891 until her death on May 25, 1918. She was an expert telegraph operator and handled all of the Government business transmitted over the Weather Bureau cable connecting Block Island and Narragansett Pier.

June Bacon-Bercey was the only African-American woman to earn a degree in meteorology in the 1950s. She became interested in science in high school despite attending a segregated school in which she was not encouraged in the subjects of math, physics, and chemistry. However, when she returned to a racially mixed school in Kansas her enthusiasm for science returned. She attended the University of California in Los Angeles, where she majored in math and meteorology. One of her teachers there suggested that she take sewing instead of meteorology. However, as Bacon Bercey told Contemporary Black Biography, when she earned an "A" in thermodynamics and a "B" in home economics, she knew that her decision to pursue a degree in science was the right one.
In 1970 Bacon-Bercey began working for an NBC television station in Buffalo as a correspondent on scientific news. Soon after she began working at the station, the current weathercaster, who had a chronic gambling problem, was fired after being arrested for robbery. The station needed someone to fill his position in a hurry and Bacon-Bercey was the obvious choice since she had a degree in meteorology. Bacon-Bercey was so adept at the job that she became the station's chief meteorologist, one of the first African-American women to hold such a position. In 1972 Bacon-Bercey became the first African American and the first woman to earn the American Meteorological Society's Seal of Approval for excellence in television weather casting. In 1977 Bacon-Bercey participated in a television game show called The $128,000 Question and she used her winnings to establish a scholarship fund for women studying atmospheric sciences. Bacon-Bercey believed the scholarship would help more women become meteorologists. After working in Buffalo, she spent nearly ten years as the Chief of Broadcast Services at NOAA and worked on a number of other projects. After over three decades in the field of meteorology, Bacon-Bercey retired and became a consultant and an educator, dedicating much of her time to encouraging women and minorities to pursue degrees and careers in meteorology.

Joanne Simpson (March 23, 1923 – March 4, 2010) was the first woman to ever receive a Ph.D. in meteorology. Simpson was a graduate of the University of Chicago and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. Simpson contributed to many areas of the atmospheric sciences, particularly in the field of tropical meteorology. She researched hot towers, hurricanes, the trade winds, air-sea interactions, and helped develop the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission. By 1966, she became the director of Project Stormfury while chief of the Experimental Meteorology Branch of the Environment Satellite Services Administration's Institute for Atmospheric Sciences. She eventually became NASA's lead weather researcher and authored or co-authored over 190 articles.
Simpson had to endure years of not being taken seriously by her male colleagues and being passed over for jobs simply because of her sex. She is quoted as saying winning the Carl-Gustav Rossby Research Medal in 1983 made her feel "it isn't really so ridiculous that I did all of this. I'm not really a freak; I am a member of the community.“ Yet, poignantly, in an article published in the New York Academy of Sciences Annals, she was quoted as saying "I am not convinced that either the position, rewards or achievements have been worth the cost. My personal and married life and child raising have surely suffered from the professional attainments I have achieved.”
Her brother Daniel C. Gerould was the Lucille Lortel Distinguished Professor of Theatre and Comparative Literature at the Graduate Center, City University of New York.

Robbie Hood is a Native American atmospheric scientist who, in September 2008, became the first permanent director of NOAA's Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program. Previously, she worked within the Earth Science Office of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. One-eighth Cherokee, Ms. Hood is a direct descendant of John Ross, the first elected chief of the Cherokee Nation. Mr. Ross is famous for leading the Cherokees on the Trail of Tears in 1938-1939. Ms. Hood spent much of her childhood in Neosho, Missouri and Picayune, Miss, where she developed an interest of weather by witnessing the devastating effects of Hurricane Camille in Miss. in 1969 and the1974 Neosho tornado. At NASA she was the leader of a group of scientists and engineers who have developed and deployed two aircraft sensors to observe precipitation and oceanic winds. In collaboration with her fellow lightning research colleagues at MSFC, her team has published research results highlighting the benefit of simultaneously sampled passive microwave observations of precipitation structures and storm electric field information to monitor the intensity of thunderstorms and tropical cyclones from an aircraft platform. As a strong advocate for scientific collaboration and partnership, Ms. Hood has been a mission scientist in three NASA research experiments studying hurricane genesis, intensity, precipitation, and landfall impacts. Ms. Hood credits her Native American heritage for her appreciation of the beneficial contributions that diversity brings to all community sectors. She also feels that the communication of scientific information across all community sectors contributes to better utilization of scientific knowledge for societal benefit. She frequently speaks to student and civic groups and has mentored both high school and undergraduate students. She enjoyed meeting Native Americans of other tribal communities when she served as the keynote speaker for the NASA Awareness Days symposium held with the North Dakota Tribal Colleges in 2002.
